The area and attractions
Stewart Island, New Zealand's third largest island, is located at the bottom of the South Island.
Bay Motel is located in the heart of the township and offers stunning views of Halfmoon Bay and the bush surrounding it. We are within easy walking distance to the ferry terminal, flight centre and all amenities: shops, restaurants, post office, bowling green and gym. The Department of Conservation and Museum are close by – both are a mine of information on Stewart Island history, flora, fauna and walking tracks.
Stewart Island is home of New Zealand’s newest National Park: Rakiura National Park, which covers the majority of the island. Stewart Island is also often called “Home of the Kiwi”, as it is the only place in New Zealand where kiwi can be viewed in their natural habitat.
Ulva Island – a must do! Now predator free, the island features an abundance of New Zealand birdlife, including Saddlebacks and Kiwi. The bush is unspoiled and quite magnificent. Your Stewart Island experience is not complete without visiting – in your own time or guided. We can help you get there.
Travel to the island by air if the ferry is not your thing – check out www.stewartislandflights.co.nz, and see what else they have to offer. We’ve done the flight to Mason’s Bay – the island is absolutely stunning from the air!
Real Journeys have the Village and Bays Bus Tour – not just an ordinary tour. A great way to learn about island life and history combined with a bit of sight-seeing. The drivers give a great commentary so this tour is for everyone, and a great way to save your legs if you’ve been overdoing the hiking. www.stewartislandexperience.co.nz. We can book this tour for you.
If you want to see or do anything that requires a boat – from water taxis to charters, check out Rakiura Charters & Water Taxis – they have an extensive range of options. Very experienced skippers with a wealth of knowledge of the island, they are the professionals. We can book you on any of their tours. See www.rakiuracharters.co.nz
If your visit to the Island coincides with a special occasion – check out www.churchhill.co.nz, a beautiful outlook and a fabulous meal. Treat yourself!
